Duties & Responsibilities: Under the direct supervision of the Fire Chief, serves as the Fire Department Safety Officer and manages the Department Safety Program in accordance with NFPA 1500/1521. Responsible for the execution of the fire prevention program, conduct fire risk management assessment/surveys assuring hazardous conditions are rectified. Participate in the fire education of all HWAD employees and residents. Review all instruction, alteration, conversion, maintenance, and repair for life safety requirements. Maintain, inspect and test all fire protection systems on the depot. Work requires the exercise of discretion and independent judgment. May be assigned occasional duties of a higher level of difficulty than those listed above. Acts as Incident Command during emergency situations as needed. Serves as Supervisor of secondary crew when made necessary by Operations. Responsibilities: • Serve as a Special Staff Officer to the Chief. Recommend changes in the Standing Operating Procedures to improve Branch functions. Assist engine companies when needed and respond to all emergencies, major accidents, fire or explosions, oil and hazardous materials spills, and accidents occurring in confined spaces. Serves as supervisor for secondary crew when necessary. • Prepare and manage required reports, records, and schedules for building inspections, sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, hot work permits, pre-plan review and fire drills. • Perform fire prevention inspections, review plans and drawings to ensure life safety on all types of buildings, structures, recreation buildings, residences, offices, shops, ordnance areas, etc. Inspections include housekeeping, fire doors, sprinklers, panic hardware, various tools, appliances, proper segregation and aisle space, and all first aid firefighting appliances. • Conduct inspection of sprinkler and other built-in fire protection systems installed in buildings. Perform pre-operational and post-operational inspections of oil, gas, and electrical equipment or any other heat-producing equipment used on Depot. • Assist engine companies when needed and responds to all emergencies that may be a result of natural forces, major accidents, fire or explosions, oil and hazardous materials spills, and/or accidents occurring in confined spaces. If first to arrive assumes Incident Command until relieved by the Senior Fire Officer. • Responsible for reporting potential real environmental concerns to the Environmental Service. Position Requirement: • U.S. Citizen • Fire Officer 1, Fire Inspector II, Fire Instructor III, HAZ-Mat IC, A.S. Degree in fire science or related field or equivalent in education and experience. • Four (4) years' experience as a Firefighter with broad knowledge of Fire Protection/Prevention. A good working knowledge of the care, operation, and maintenance of all fire equipment is essential. A thorough knowledge of the Hawthorne Army Depot (HWAD) layout is essential. • Must be able to read blueprints and drawings and interpret fire code. Must be able to obtain and maintain certification through the Private Investigators Licensing Board (PILB).
