Substation and Transmission Electrical Engineering Internship
At Colorado Springs Utilities, most of the electrical design for our transmission and distribution substations is completed in-house. The team is responsible for all designs associated with 12.5kV through 230kV substations and transmission. The work is unique in that the design engineers often function as project managers for their own design projects, and thus participate, then lead, the project through all phases. This provides a great opportunity for an electrical/power engineering student to strengthen their knowledge regarding power system designs and project management.
An internship in Substation and Transmission Engineering offers the following learning opportunities:
Overview of our electrical system and why we are known for our reliability
Participation in scope, budget, and schedule development
Development of engineering and construction guidelines
Participation in technical discussions through project refinement
Detailed electrical schematic designs
Substation equipment procurements and specifications
Schedule and budget development and implementation
Technical support through construction and commissioning of substation projects
Opportunity to visit substations and see the implementation of the design
Exposure to mechanical and civil aspects of substation engineering
Exposure to substation maintenance concerns and challenges
In this role, we are specifically seeking an electrical engineering student and this intern will provide support to substation design engineers through any of the responsibilities mentioned above, with completed substation safety trainings prior to visiting substation sites. Additionally, you may have opportunities to also shadow and/or assist maintenance and civil engineers as well.
This internship position will require 40 hours/week from May 28th through August 9th (if possible). Additionally, the plan is for the internship to extend beyond the summer and through the 2024/2025 school year, with more limited hours; a maximum of 20 hours per week. The position can be designed to support a student’s school schedule.
