The Huron-Manistee National Forests

The forests of northern Michigan are rich in history. Glaciers shaped the landscape as the frozen rock and ice formed many beautiful lakes. In the later 1800’s logging was in its heyday and the loggers unknowingly left a barren wasteland that nobody wanted. In 1909 the Huron National Forest was established and the Manistee National Forest was formed in 1938. Working hand in hand with the Michigan DNR and other partners, the Forest Service has changed the “lands that nobody wanted” to healthy forests again.

The Huron-Manistee National Forests are composed of approximately 964,700 acres of National Forest System lands. Terrain is generally flat with some moraine hills and includes wetlands, scattered prairie remnants, Great Lakes shorelines and dunes, and an assortment of hardwood and forest communities.

This Forest is truly a land of many uses. Commodity production includes a strong timber sale program. The recreation program features a large amount of developed and dispersed camping as the Forest is within easy reach of large metropolitan areas such as Chicago, Detroit, and Grand Rapids. There are many miles of hiking, snowmobile, and ORV trails. Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area is located along the shores of Lake Michigan on the Manistee District. There are five designated wild and scenic rivers of the Forests including three on the Manistee District.
