1. Emergency Management Volunteer Opportunity – Colorado Springs, CO
Pikes Peak United Way Needs Your Help!
As you know El Paso County has experienced some major disasters over the last two years and all of us have learned a lot going through the fires and floods. Pikes Peak United Way 211 is teaming up with El Paso County and City of Colorado Springs to enhance communication with the public during a disaster.
During a large emergency local governments operate a Joint Information Center (JIC) where information is generated for the media, but also calls are taken from the public with any type of questions the public may have about the disaster and what to do. We have all come together to increase the number of people we can rely on to take the phone calls from the public in the JIC.
We would like to get Pikes Peak United Way volunteers involved. The ideal volunteer would be able to stay calm under stress, operate a computer or tablet and show empathy to the people they are talking to on the other end of the phone. The volunteers would be in a database and would be contacted in the event of an emergency. After being contacted the volunteers would sign up for scheduled hours to take phone calls from the public in the JIC. Some may end up working 4 hours during a large scale event others 50. All depending on the need and their specific availability.
We are hosting trainings for the JIC Call Takers on Monday, February 3 from 2-4pm and Wednesday, February 5 from 9-11am both at Centennial Hall at 200 S. Cascade. This training will be offered annually. If you interested in attending please RSVP by responding to this email or by emailing claire@ppunitedway.org or calling 719-955-0746.
Thanks!
