THE POSITION The Columbine Ranger District Fire Program has one Type 6 engine (3-5 person) and a 10 person Type 2 Wildland Fire Module. Overhead positions include FMO and AFMO-Fuels. Columbine Fire is seeking individuals with a strong work ethic. Applicants must be in excellent physical condition. Crews typically respond to wildfires both locally and nationally. Crewmembers may be gone up to 2 weeks during fire assignments. Work involves long ardous physical exertion in rigorous terrain, while maintaining a positive attitude with your co-workers. When not performing fire duties the crews typically are involved with training, thinning, prescribed fire prep, fencing, hazzard tree removal, trail maintenance and any other district needs at the time. Government housing may be availbale for a nominal fee. Housing is located 17 miles North of Bayfield. Work Capacity Test (WCT) for wildland firefighters: This position participates in wildland firefighting activities. Based on the type of work performed. Taking and passing the WCT at the arduous level is a “condition of employment.” The arduous fitness (Pack) Test consist of a three (3) mile hike, within forty-five (45) minutes, while carrying a forty-five (45) pound pack. Note: GS-5 HANDCREW and GS-5 ENGINE positions must meet IFPM requirements of FFT1 and S-290. COLUMBINE RANGER DISTRICT The Columbine District covers over 650,000 acres of forest service land and over 70,000 acres of BLM land. Approximately two-thirds of the Weminuche Wilderness Area lies within the jurisdiction of the Columbine District. The District manages part of the 61,850 Piedra Management Area. The mountainous terrain contains three peaks over 14,000 feet and several more over 13,000 feet. The District has a complex Fire and Fuels Management Program, along with Recreation, Range, Heritage Resources and Minerals. The population of Durango is approximately 18,000, while the population o f La Plata County is over 44,000. The elevation of Durango is 6,512.Durango is situated to allow for many forms of recreation. While we are within 30 miles of Durango Mountain Resort ski area we are also with 2-4 hours of Canyon Lands and Lake Powell. Durango receives an average of 70 inches of snow each year, but also has 300 sunshine days a year. The area offers unlimited recreation opportunities including hiking, camping, mountain biking, fishing and four wheeling and golfing. Real estate prices in Durango vary, but in general are in excess of 280,000 plus. Rentals are available. Condominiums are available to purchase or rent.
