Gas Pipefitter Apprentice
Colorado Springs Utilities is hiring a Gas Pipefitter Apprentice. This is a 4-year paid apprenticeship program that will prepare you to safely perform the construction, installation, repair, and maintenance of utility gas service lines and mains.
Our Gas Pipefitter Apprenticeship program is certified through the Department of Labor (DOL), and consists of a combination of both classroom and on-the-job training. To be successful as an apprentice you must be a self-starter, maintain focus and commit to advancing your career in the gas trade. You must be capable of handling multiple projects, prioritizing tasks, working effectively under pressure, meeting deadlines, and communicating with all levels of the organization.
As a gas pipefitter apprentice, you will learn to:
Assist in installing gas mains and service lines, repairs, and maintenance in accordance with Federal Gas Regulations
Use hand-operated and electric, pneumatic, and hydraulic power tools to assist with the construction and maintenance projects
Connect and inspect gas mains and service lines
Operate gas construction excavation equipment
Tapping pipelines
Perform plastic fusions, including electro and butt fusions
Comply with safety standards and standard operating procedures in support of an incident and injury-free workplace
Respond to emergencies and assist in repairs
Qualifications we seek:
Qualified candidates will offer a minimum of six months of construction/trade experience
Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred at the time of hire, otherwise, a CDL permit must be obtained within 6 months of hire and a CDL License within 1 year
Successful candidates will be self-directed and motivated to advance through the program by obtaining the required knowledge, on-the-job training, scheduling evaluations, and passing the written testing requirements along the way
Apprentice pay schedule:
Step one pay as an apprentice is currently $27.33/hr. Apprentices can expect a pay bump with each completed step (8-step program/6 months on average per step). Journey-level pipefitters are paid $36.82/hr.
Additional requirements and considerations:
While an Apprentice at Colorado Springs Utilities, you are not eligible to apply to any other positions at Colorado Springs Utilities
Starting in year 3, Step 5 of the apprenticeship program, you will be designated as a first responder for emergencies. This means you will be required to stay within the service territory while on standby
You will be required to pull stand-by, overtime, weekends, holidays, and 24-hour call-outs as the business need demand. In addition, you will work in hazardous conditions and be prepared to work in inclement weather
