43. Vice President, Industry Relations and Business Development –Seattle, WA
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center
Req #: 4131
US-
Overview:
FHRCR was founded in 1965 by Seattle surgeon Dr. William Hutchinson in honor of his brother, the major league pitcher and coach Fred Hutchinson, who died of lung cancer in 1964 at the age of 45. Since its inception the institution has attracted leading scientists whose research and scholarship have elevated the Center to the top echelon of world-renowned research organizations.
The current campus of six modern buildings sits on a gently sloping hillside on Seattle's waterfront with views of Lake Union, a picturesque coastline, and recreational and seagoing vessels. The main campus of the University of Washington (UW) is nearby to the east and Seattle's vibrant downtown area is located close by to the west.
The scientists and staff, supported by the Center's leadership, dedicate themselves to the lofty mission of "...elimination of cancer as a cause of human suffering and death...(to achieve the mission) the Center conducts research of the highest standards to improve knowledge, prevention and the treatment of cancer and related diseases.
Fred Hutch now employs approximately 3,000 scientists and staff and has an annual budget of approximately $400 million, 90 percent of which is research grants and contracts. Scientists conduct their research in five scientific divisions: Basic Sciences; Human Biology; Clinical Research; Public Health Sciences; and Vaccine and Infectious Disease. Physicians at FHCRC provide clinical services to oncology patients through the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, a joint venture with the University of Washington (UW) and Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center; the Alliance is one of the nation's leading adult and pediatric cancer centers.
Along with other outstanding research organizations such as UW, the Seattle Biomedical Research Institute, and the Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason, FHCRC is a key contributor to Seattle's thriving science and technology community. The Gates Foundation provides funding for a wide array of Seattle based research and program development and services which address global health needs. A growing venture capital base, an increased entrepreneurial community, and world leading companies such as Amazon and Microsoft support the region's entrepreneurial and business sectors.
Responsibilities:
The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC or the Center), located in scenic Seattle, Washington, seeks nominations and applications for the position of Vice President for Industry Relations and Business Development The Vice President reports to FHCRC's President and Director Larry Corey, MD. He/she works with Myra Tanita, the Center's Chief Operating Officer and the Chief Financial Officer, Randy Main, on business development. The Vice President will also work with selected members of the Board of Trustees to develop funding sources for commercialization initiatives.
The new Vice President will have senior responsibility for creatively shaping and building the Center's programs to increase the use of its intellectual property in products and care programs that improve human health, expanding productive and mutually beneficial collaborations with industry, and contributing to FHCRC's future plans and strategy. This is a unique opportunity to develop new paradigms for company start-ups, technology licensing, and business development that will expand the application of medical research to patients. Successful leaders at the Center value collaboration, transparency, and selflessness. The new Vice President must mirror these values as he/she carries out his/her assignments in support of the Center's mission and goals. He/she will be successful in contributing to the success of FHCRC's scientists, and other senior leaders and will derive personal and professional satisfaction from contributing to the Center's success. Additionally, the Vice President will be skilled at working collaboratively with the faculty, identifying science with significant commercial potential, and have the experience and expertise to develop beneficial relationships with commercial entities, governmental agencies, and other domestic and international research institutions. In this regard the Vice President will be adept at accessing the skills and contacts of board members to identify funding sources and potential partners for successful collaborations.
Late last year FHCRC, in conjunction with Memorial Sloan-Kettering and Seattle Children's Research Institute, announced the formation of Juno Therapeutics, a new biotechnology company focused on advancing a broad pipeline of potential curative immunotherapy treatments for cancer. Juno was launched with an initial investment of $145 million, making it one of the largest ever Series A investments in a biotech startups. Senior staff from Industry Relations and Clinical Research Support were key contributors to this major and novel approach to commercialization. Juno is a model of new company start-ups that FHCRC expects to repeat in the future.
The new Vice President will play an important role in identifying science with great commercial potential and subsequently work with a wide range of internal and external constituencies, including faculty members, research staff, health care executives, investors, biotech leaders, and public agencies to facilitate commercialization.
Certainly not all discoveries will form the basis for a new company and as such, the Vice President will be responsible for triaging new discoveries to licenses with existing companies or to start-up entities. This will require nuanced judgment and a strong understanding of science and market needs as well as collaboration with investigators. The Vice President and his/her staff will work closely with faculty to learn about FHCRC's research programs and identify early-stage research that may lead to new discoveries with commercial potential. An important aspect of this work is continuing to build strong relationships with the faculty to encourage scientists to disclose discoveries with potentially important commercial and health care applications.
To accelerate research with commercial potential the Vice President will have a small investment fund for "proof of concept" research to support development of science. Part of this continuum of work will involve close attention to market needs and identification of companies that will license FHCRC discoveries. As with service to investigators, the Vice President and his/her staff will enhance the Center's relationships with existing companies, entrepreneurs, and investors.
A third major arena for the Vice President will be to work with other senior leaders to increase research funding from foundations and corporations. With diligent and tireless work this can be accomplished by building FHCRC's reputation for scientific excellence and ability and willingness to collaborate with the private sector among leaders of life sciences companies, both domestic and international. The new Vice President will work with his/her counterpart in the development office to obtain funding to bring research closer to commercial potential.
Qualifications:
The Vice President will have a strong understanding of science and technology and a proven track record in the areas of new company start-ups, technology commercialization, and research funding. Prior experience in these areas at a major research institution and/or commercial venture is required.
The successful candidate will possess many of the following capabilities and personal attributes.
* A proven record of translating basic science discoveries into commercialized products;
* Proven leadership skills in working effectively and building relationships with a wide range of internal and external constituencies, including faculty members, research staff, health care executives, investors, biotech leaders, and public agencies;
* Strong communication and advocacy skills
