Arizona Conservation Corps Veterans Fire Corps (VFC) - Recruiting Veterans - August 22 & 23rd (Colorado Springs, CO) Veterans, Representatives from the Arizona Conservation Corps Veterans Fire Corps (VFC) will be at the Pikes Peak Workforce Center on August 22nd and 23rd to meet with, discuss and interview post 9-11 veterans interested in work in Wild Land Firefighting and Fire Effects Monitoring. The Veteran Fire Crew (VFC) will start September 12, and end December 8. They will go and receive their s130/190 Wildland fire certs and saw training at Colorado Fire Camp. This crew will be working closely with Lincoln National Forest in New Mexico, working with chainsaws and on fire fuel reduction, thinning, and other wildland fire fuel related projects. Crew of 8, will work out of Tucson Arizona, work a 9 days on, 5 days off. Pay is $375 a week and food is provided during the 9 days in the field. The Fire Effects Monitoring Crew will be a smaller crew of 4-5 people, working on data collection and sampling of vegetation after a burn. Vegetation sampling will include identifying tree species, measuring tree diameter, height, and crown base height. Fuels sampling will include documenting size and number of surface fuels. Vegetation cover will be recorded as a percentage of the plot area. All sampling and measurement methods will be taught during the first week of work. This crew also starts on September 12, but end on December 16. Same schedule and benefits as the VFC Crew. Veterans who take part in this training often obtain the skills and experience necessary to obtain employment with the U.S. Forest Service and other Federal, State, and local government agencies. Conduct postmortem studies and analyses to determine the cause of animals’ deaths. Perform administrative duties such as scheduling appointments and maintaining records. Inspect and test animals to detect the presence of communicable diseases. Research diseases to which animals could be susceptible. Inspect animal housing to determine cleanliness and adequacy.
