23. MILITARY AND VETERANS EMPLOYMENT EXPO, May 23 – 25, 2011 (Golden, CO)

Jefferson County Fairgrounds Building
15200 West 6th Avenue
Golden, Colorado 80401

OVERVIEW
I. Background: With statistics showing our Veterans having twice the unemployment rate of others in our country, Department of Labor/ VETS (US/DOL), Colorado Department of Labor and Employment (CDLE), Employer Support for the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), Colorado Army National Guard (COARNG), Denver Chamber of Commerce, together with numerous non-governmental entities , have banded together to organize and plan a series of comprehensive and professional three day Expo to provide needed and essential assistance to those Veterans and Military Personnel in Colorado seeking employment.

II. Concept: The goal is to bring together employers and Veterans and Military Personnel seeking employment where both can address and meet each others employment needs. Over time we realized that job fairs alone are not the answer. Colorado is not lacking in job fair events; yet the employment rate is still the highest among Veterans and Military Personnel. We know that for some Veterans and Military personnel, the lack of their being hired is in part due to their inability to properly market themselves to employers. They have the valued skills and abilities gained through their military experience that an employer would highly value but being able to relay this within their resume, in the interview and/or through networking, seems to be what they struggle with most. We have also come to realize that today’s employment market is very competitive and the chance for one to get even the smallest face time before a hiring authority is difficult. We would like this Employment Expo to be different. We will not just look to the number of attendees at the Job Fair to gage our success in this endeavor. Rather we will look to the quality of attendees both employers and employees alike and those who are hired as a result as a way to measure our success. We want to attract Veterans and Military Personnel who are willing to take that extra step to become market ready and to help them obtain gainful employment.

• The commitment that we will make to the Veteran and Military Personnel Registrants: That with your commitment to ensuring that you are the best and most qualified candidate for the jobs in which you apply for, we will bring to you employers who are within your occupational field and ready to hire. We will recruit businesses that will not only take your resume, if you are a qualified fit, but if possible arrange for an interview. We will invite those who are just as committed to getting you hired as you are to getting hired.

• The commitment that we will make to the employers: That with your willingness to come with viable job opportunities and a true desire to find and possibly hire that “ideal” candidate from the candidate pool that is provided to you, we will bring to you individuals who willingly gave up their time to attended the employment classes to prepare themselves ring individuals to their participation we will bring certified Veteran attendees who willing gave up time to prepare themselves through hours of classroom teachings.
Plan of Action:
Monday, May 23 and Tuesday May 24
Seven classes will be offered on both Monday and Tuesday, with 5 of the most important classes being given twice each day. A commitment is required from participants to register and attend at least 4 of the 8 classes. After attending 4 classes the participant will be given a Certificate of Participation.
